Choosing Winter Tires

Summary: Choosing winter tires is not as simple as just going down to you local tire store an picking the ones that look good. There are a few things that a person needs to keep in mind before making their final decision. Here is how you can do that.

Choosing winter tires can be a fairly important decision to make. Not only does someone need to worry about the expense that comes along with purchasing new tires, there is also the little fact that these are the tires that are going to help keep you on the road. Believe it or not, there are a few things that a person needs to keep in mind before simply going out and purchasing a bunch of all-season radials.

Use these simple guidelines when looking for your next set of snow tires, and you are going to be able to get those perfect ones that you need. In fact, by using these simple guidelines, you are going to be able to tell whether or not you even need to purchase snow tires at all.

  1. Tire Size. The very first thing that you need to do is look in the owner's manual of your car to find out just what kind of tires you are even able to have on your vehicle.
  2. Tread Size. Quite often you will want to use narrower tires when it comes to driving in snow and ice. The reason for this is that the narrower tires are better able to create a path through all the slush and snow that comes during the winter.
  3. Type. The best possible tires that you can get for winter driving would be metal studded tires. Unfortunately, these tires are considered illegal in 10 states (meaning you can't use them at all), and only seasonal in about 30 others. Be sure that you know whether you can use them in your state before you purchase them.
  4. Mount. Even if it is more tempting to only get two tires for your car, especially for front wheel drive vehicles, you are going to want to make sure that you get a full set of tires. The reason for this is that having multiple types of tires is going to affect how your vehicle handles. Vehicle handling is extremely important during the winter months, and you don't want to do anything that is going to adversely affect how your vehicle handles.
  5. Maintain. If you have actually decided to purchase some snow tires, then you are going to want to maintain them. These are an investment after all, and as such are something that should be protected. Take some time to look at your owner's manual to see what the recommended winter tire pressure is. Remember that your tires are going to lose roughly one psi (pounds per square inch) for every ten degrees that the temperature drops, so check their pressure regularly.
