Making Your Car Smell New

Summary: One of the things that most people love about getting a new car, is that new car smell. The smell of a new car helps you to know that it is completely clean, and nothing that can embarrass you. Here is how you can make your old beater, feel new again.

I don't know about you, but for me one of those things that I love the most about a new car is their smell. There is nothing like it, is there? Whenever I catch a whiff of that smell, I am suddenly filled with hope, excitement and wonder. I think that basically it is simply the possibilities that seem to come along with that smell, the possibilities that seemed to fill my life with the purchase of that first brand new car.

So how do you go about and get that wonderfully optimistic smell restored to an older vehicle? There are many ways that one can go about and get that fragrance put back into their car, most of which cost an arm and a leg. If you are looking at saving some money, in fact if you are looking at want to spend virtually no money but still getting that new car scent, then you are in luck. Here is how you can go about and do just that. In order to do this though, you are going to need to gather just a couple of items before you begin.

Items:

  • Unscented dryer sheets
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Crevice tool hose attachment
  • Vinyl cleaner/protectant
  • Clean, lint free rags

Procedure:

  1. Clean out the interior of your car as you normally would. This means that you are going to vacuum out the entire car. Start with your floors, by removing the floor mats, and then vacuuming off the floors, and then proceeding to the seats. Use your crevice tool to reach into those tough to reach spaces.
  2. Using the vinyl protectant/cleaner (ArmorAll is a good choice) and your lint free rags proceed to wipe down, and clean all the vinyl. You are going to want to start at the highest point of the vinyl surfaces and work your way downwards. So you should start at the headrest on your seats and work down, or start at the dashboard top and work down.
  3. If you smoke, then you need to clean all your old smoke butts out of the ashtray. If possible, you are going to want to completely clean the ashtray, wash it out, etc. After you have done this keep in mind that smoking in your car is going to seriously diminish the life of your new car smell, so if possible refrain from smoking in your car.
  4. After you have cleaned out the interior of your car, take those dryer sheets. It doesn't really matter what brand or what scent, just keep in mind that if you are going for the "new car" smell then you want to use the unscented ones—they are going to act like a filter. Place one under each of your vehicle's seats. Then turn the car on, and run the heater at full blast for about 10 minutes. This will help circulate the air, and the scent. You should now have a completely fresh, and new smelling car or truck again.
