Picking a Truck Bed Liner

Written by Lee Wyatt (last updated August 23, 2013)

If you have a truck, then you know just how important having a truck bed liner can be. Not only does this item help protect the general welfare of your bed truck, it can also help enhance the look of the vehicle as well. Picking a truck bed liner is more than just picking something that "looks good." Here are a few guidelines that you should keep in mind.

  • Know your uses. Not everyone uses their truck for the same purposes, and as such not everyone will be using a truck bed liner in the same manner. While there will be some crossover in the uses, you need to think about what you will be primarily using the truck for. Keep this in mind as you go about researching the various types and styles of bed liners.
  • Research your styles. There are basically two major styles, or types, of truck bed liners. The first type is the kind that is designed to simply slide into the truck bed. This type of liner is then bolted, or attached in some way to the bed to keep it from blowing out while the truck is being driven down the road. The other major type of bed liner is the type that is sprayed into the bed liner. This means that it adheres directly to the bed in much the same way that Teflon coatings adhere to pots and pans.
  • Who will install it? Another one of the things that you should consider is who will be installing the bed liner. While there are some drawbacks to having a professional install a bed liner (such as an added expense), there are also quite a few benefits. One such benefit is that you can (almost always) be guaranteed that the liner will have been installed correctly. This means that there are more than likely going to be fewer problems due to having the bedding professionally installed. In addition, the sprayed bed liners typically can only be installed by a professional.
  • How hard is it to maintain? One of the main things that you will need to remember about bed liners is that once they have been installed, you will need to maintain it. As with most things in the world, different types of bed liners will need to be maintained in different ways. Make sure that you understand how the different types need to be maintained (at least the basic levels) and choose the one that will be the easiest for you to maintain.

After considering these guidelines, you can begin getting the truck ready for installation. Make sure that the bed liner is installed correctly though, otherwise you can end up causing more damage to the truck that you would imagine. For example, if there is too much space left between the liner and the truck bed, you can end up promoting the growth of mildew, rust, and other problems.
